This web page was designed to provide a listing
of electronic text resources for students, faculty
and staff at educational institutions as well
as for the community. This listing is by no means
comprehensive, but rather a starting point for
your searches for electronic text. If you are
aware of other electronic text resources and would
like to see them added here, please do not hesitate

Accessible Archives was founded in 1990 with the
goal of utilizing computer technology to make
available vast quantities of archived historical
information, previously furnished only on microfilm.
In pursuit of this vision, primary newspaper records
have been selected which reflect a broad view
of the times, and have been assembled into databases
with a strict attention to detail allowing access
to specific information with pinpoint accuracy.
By using CD-ROM format and including full text
retrieval software and digital imaging, in an
MS-DOS environment, the user is able to search
and manipulate information in ways neverbefore
possible.

The Alex Catalogue
The Alex Catalogue of Electronic Texts is a collection
of public domain documents from American and English
literature as well as Western philosophy.

Bartleby.com
Named after the humble character of Melville’s
classic, Bartleby the Scrivener, Bartleby.com
publishes the classics of literature, nonfiction
and reference free of charge for the home, classroom
and desktop of each and every Internet participant.

Bibliomania
Bibliomania's extensive library of classic literature,
reference books and study resources provides 24/7
accessibility. It is a great way to bring the
use of IT into literature lessons, and it saves
on the cost of books. Bibliomania's search engine
lets students find relevant information faster
so that they can spend more time analyzing texts.

Resource where one can locate full electronic
versions of top technical books, fully searchable
and consistently presented (subscription required).

Bookshare.org
is an online community that enables people with
visual and other print disabilities to legally
share scanned books. Bookshare.org takes advantage
of a special exemption in the U.S. copyright law
that permits the reproduction of publications
into specialized formats for the disabled. Bookshare.org
is expected to be fully functional by late 2001.

Classic Bookshelf gives you free access to great
works of classic literature.

ebrary
ebrary develops software and services for the
secure online access and delivery of authoritative
copyrighted content. ebrary has created the ebrarian
solution for channel partners and is working with
publishers and other content providers to create
a rich online library of copyrighted books, journals,
periodicals and more that can be freely indexed
by search engines via its open access model....

Library
Resource for newspapers, magazines, books, pictures,
maps and TV and radio transcripts in electronic
format.

Electronic Text Center
1,600 publicly-available ebooks from the University
of Virginia Library's eText Center, including
classic British and American fiction, major authors,
children's literature, American history, Shakespeare,
African-American documents, the Bible, and much
more.

Internet
Public Library
The Internet Public Library is the first public
library of the Internet and is committed to providing
library services to the Internet community, to
learn and teach what librarians have to contribute
in a digital environment, to promote librarianship
and the importance of libraries, and to share
interesting ideas and techniques with other librarians.

The Library of Congress
Excellent URL with links to other electronic text

NetLibrary
The two-year-old company sells full-text books
to academic, public, and corporate libraries.
Its collection of33,000-plus volumes is available
with proprietary reading software to subscribing
libraries and individuals with private accounts.

On-Line Book Page
The On-Line Books Page is a website that facilitates
access to books that are freely readable over
the Internet. It also aims to encourage the development
of such on-line books, for the benefit and edification
of all.

Project
Gutenberg
The Project Gutenberg Philosophy is to make information,
books and other materials available to the general
public in forms a vast majority of the computers,
programs and people can easily read, use, quote,
and search.

Questia
The digital-book company, which focuses on an
undergraduate clientele, began selling unlimited
access to its collection of 35,000 e-books and
journals in January.

Reading
for the Blind and Dyslexic (RFB&D) - RFB&D's
library contains more than 109,000 titles in a
broad variety of subjects, from literature and
history to math and the sciences, at all academic
levels, from kindergarten through post-graduate
and professional.
TechAdapt was established in 1998 by Sharon
von See, a Braille transcriber with fourteen years'

The
Virtual Libarary
The VL is the oldest catalog of the web, started
by Tim Berners-Lee, the creator of html and the
web itself. Unlike commercial catalogs, it is
run by a loose confederation of volunteers, who
compile pages of key links for particular areas
in which they are expert; even though it isn't
the biggest index of the web, the VL pages are
widely recognised as being amongst the highest-quality
guides to particular sections of the web.

XanEdu.com
A division of Bell & Howell Information and
Learning, the company sells electronic access
to journals, periodicals, and other information
from a giant commercial archive called ProQuest.

Digital Learning Interactive
Digital Learning Interactive understands the liberating

Lulu
Lulu allows professors to publish and customize
textbooks. Lulu is seeks to create a broad marketplace
for different kinds of digital content, including
music and images in addition to books. Lulu allows
anyone to publish and sell, or customize, a book.
Authors pay nothing to publish work and set their
own royalties for sales. Purchased books can be
delivered in electronic or print formats. Images
and music can be purchased and downloaded or delivered
on CDs.

Thinkwell
Founded in 1997, the company develops electronic
textbooks that use video clips of the authors
presenting material. The venture has developed
13 titles and plans to add 10 more by the end
of 2001.

Adobe Systems
Producer of Photoshop and other graphics programs,
the company has designed a version of its popular
Acrobat page-display software to handle e-books.
The Acrobat eBook reader is free online.
Adobe also has a separate website address accessibility
issues at http://access.adobe.com.Gemstar-TV
Guide. The company works with R.C.A. and other
hardware manufacturers to sell a tablet-like computer
dedicated to displaying e-books. In January 2000,
it bought two companies that made similar devices,
SoftBook Press (which sold the SoftBook), and
NuvoMedia (which sold the Rocket eBook).
The company now supports two models -- the REB
1100, which has a black-and-white screen that
measures 5.5 inches diagonally, weighs 17 ounces,
and costs about $300; and the REB 1200, which
features an 8-inch color screen, weighs 33 ounces,
and costs $600 to $700.

Jones
e-global Library
A division of JonesKnowledge.com, which sells
distance-education software and runs Jones International
University, the company organizes discipline-specific
packages of online resources and sells them, along
with reference help, to colleges.

Microsoft
The company offers free e-book-display software
called Microsoft
Reader , available for laptop or desktop computers
running Windows, and for hand-held computers that
run Microsoft's PocketPC operating system.

It is an excellent resource for utilizing the
KURZWEIL 3000 for electronic text conversion.
This site includes tutorials, guide, student testimonies
and more regarding the use of KURZWEIL 3000 for
electronic text.
High
Tech Center Training Unit - Alternate Media Guide
An excellent resource guide providing information
on production of electronic text and alternate
media by the California Community Colleges.
Also included is the text of AB 422, the California
Bill requiring publishers to provide electronic
text to California schools.
