COMPLAINTS OR GRIEVANCES
REGARDING DISABILITY ACCOMMODATIONS and
DISCRIMINATION on the BASIS OF DISABILITY
Students with disabilities who request or use
accommodations, modifications, and/or adjustments
or who believe that they have been discriminated
against on the basis of their disability, may
bring these issues to the attention of the Disability
Services Center (DSC), telephone 949-824-7494.
Students who have such concerns are strongly encouraged
to immediately contact DSC and not wait, for example,
until late in the quarter, the end of the quarter
or after the quarter. It is our experience that
nearly all concerns or issues are quickly or satisfactorily
resolved after the student discusses the matter
with Disability Services Center. DSC will work
with University personnel and the student to resolve
disagreements or concerns regarding accommodations
or particular campus policies/procedures. Students
may contact DSC for resolution if the concern
or complaint is about DSC services or accommodations,
or if the concern or complaint involves a different
campus department or office. Alternatively, if
the concern or complaint involves DSC services
or accommodations, the student may contact the
Ombudsman Office or the Office of Equal Opportunity
and Diversity to informally resolve the matter
or file a formal complaint.
Students may request and receive any DSC policies
or procedures that concern disability accommodations.
There are a large number of written procedures
and guidelines form DSC. It is the student's responsibility
to request and review any of the pertinent written
policies or procedures.
Students may also contact the Ombudsman Office
(437 Administration Building, telephone 949-824-7256)
to request informal resolution of disability-related
concerns.
The UCI Office of Equal Opportunity and Diversity
(OEOD) is responsible for campus compliance with
the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and
Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973.
Students with disabilities may file formal complaints
with OEOD. Complaints or inquiries regarding grievance
procedures should be addressed to: University
of California, Irvine, Director, Office of Equal
Opportunity and Diversity, 4500 Berkeley Place,
Irvine, CA 92697; telephone 949-824-5594.
Under requirements of the ADA, and Section 504
of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973, individuals
with disabilities also have a right to file a
complaint with the Office for Civil Rights in
the U.S. Department of Education, or pursue legal
action through the federal court system.
