GENERAL INFORMATION ON THE DSC

University of California, Irvine, is committed to providing equal opportunities for students with disabilities. The Disability Services Center supports the University's goal of promoting individual growth and development, civility, and diversity by providing disability-related programs and services. The Disability Services Center staff also serves as a resource for the entire University community, so that students with disabilities can freely and actively participate in all facets of University life. Upon being admitted to the UCI, students are encouraged to visit or contact the office without delay to arrange services. The staff at DSC will request that the student submit documentation of their disability. After evaluating the documentation, the staff at Disability Services will inform the student if they are eligible for services.

SERVICES AND ACCOMODATIONS

The Disability Counselors work with eligible students in securing both academic and non-academic accommodations. Even students who do not predict that they will need services while at UCI are strongly encouraged to consider registering with the office. Should an unexpected need for accommodations arise during the students' academic career, the staff of Disability Services Center can begin assisting the student immediately if the office already has the appropriate documentation on file.

Services may include:

  • Pre-admission and pre-enrollment planning
  • Priority registration for classes
  • Disability management counseling
  • Liaison to faculty
  • Notification to faculty of necessary accommodations
  • Specialized orientation to campus
  • Workshops on Disability Management, Strategies & Skills
  • Assistance to faculty and staff to work effectively with students with disabilities
  • Tutoring referral
  • Assistive computing/technology
  • Liaison with the CA Department of Rehabilitation
  • A loan library of resources
  • Disability Services Center's Adaptive Technologies Lab and/or stations located in the UCI Libraries' computer labs

Accommodations may include:

  • Testing accommodations
  • Notetaking services
  • Readers
  • Scribes
  • Sign language interpreters
  • Assistive listening devices
  • Real-time captioning services
  • Preferential seating
  • Assistance in receiving books on tape
  • Text Conversion
  • Accessible parking
  • Priority housing

PLEASE NOTE: Specific services or accommodations are not put into place until the student meets with a Disability Counselor and fills out the appropriate paperwork.

ADAPTIVE COMPUTING/TECHNOLOGY

The Disability Services Center offers use of adaptive equipment and supportive computer technology in its computer lab and at computer stations at other campus locations. It provides screen reading, screen magnification, learning assistance, and scan-and-read software for student use. Adaptive equipment, including a Brailler, scanners, ergonomic keyboards/mice, and adaptive/ergonomic furniture may be available.
